Following his resignation from the Justice League on July 27, 2018, Batman assembled a new covert operations team lead by himself, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Oracle, Robin, Aquaman and Miss Martian as part of plan to better combat meta-human trafficking and the Light. Whereas Robin referrs to the group as the Anti-Light, Black Lightning derisively nicknamed them Batman Incorporated (or Batman Inc. for short).[1][2]

The team was disbanded on February 24, 2019 after its members rejoined the Justice League and the Team respectively.

History

Batman's team is officially established when he, along with Green Arrow, Batwoman, Katana, Plastic Man, Metamorpho and Hardware resign from the Justice League and Robin, Spoiler and Arrowette resign from The Team following sanctions put on the League by Lex Luthor in his new role as Secretary General of the United Nations. Batman sets out to form a covert team who are able to achieve things in service of the greater good that the League is now unable to do.

Batman Inc. are first revealed when they covertly engineer the neutralisation of a metahuman trafficking operation run by Branchwater Security. Aquaman, working publicly with the Justice League, teams up with The Flash, Rocket and Shazam to apprehend Sportsmaster and Abra Kadabra who had intercepted a prison transport and freed Brick, who was on the way to Belle Reve Penitentiary. Although the heroes manage to re-capture Brick and Abra Kadabra, Sportsmaster escapes with one of the other prisoners.

Batman's team stalking

Robin, Spoiler, Arrowette and Orphan stalking the Mad Hatter.

Robin takes a team consisting of himself, Arrowette, Spoiler and Orphan on a mission to track the Mad Hatter, who was recently released from Arkham Asylum. They notice that he is drinking a lot of bottled water and leaving behind a strange backwash. Orphan slices Hatter in half, revealing him to be Clayface is disguise. During the battle, Spoiler warns the team not to lose focus on finding the real Mad Hatter and, upon hearing this, Clayface retreats and a tracker implanted on him leads them directly to the Hatter's hideout. They find the Hatter injecting nanotech into a hostage, which enables him to take complete control over them. Having already taken control of Clayface in the same manner, the Hatter escapes when Robin's team make their entrance by causing his hideout to self-destruct and using Clayface as a distraction to buy himself time.

Having already learned that the missing Tara Markov had been taken by the League of Shadows, Nightwing suggests locating Cheshire, who may be able to provide further information but, realising that she may not be co-operative, he assembles a team consisting of Tigress, Black Lightning, Geo-Force, Forager and Halo. They track Chesire, who is working with Shade, Mist and Livewire to an airfield where Geo-Force is able to ground their plane before it takes off. While Nightwing and Black Lightning take on Mist and Shade, Geo-Force, Halo and Forager attack Shade. With Cheshire's teammates otherwise engaged, Tigress sneaks onto the plane to confront her sister and attempts to get her to disclose the identity of the Shadow's new leader as well as the location of their base. Cheshire admits that she has no idea who is leading the Shadows following the ousting of Ra's al Ghul but reveals that their base is on Santa Prisca.

Holding a meeting in the Batcave, Nightwing, Robin and Aquaman give mission reports to Batman, Wonder Woman, Oracle and Miss Martian. Batman informs his inner circle that they have successfully shut down the Branchwater meta-trafficking operation, with Oracle explaining that she had identified three links in their supply chain: acquisition, coercion and utilisation. In the acquisition phase, Branchwater liberates metahuman prisoners such as Clayface, Livewire and Mist before moving into the coercion phase where the Mad Hatter uses his nanotech to force them to follow his commands. In the utilisation phase teams, such as the one lead by Cheshire, are made to undertake a range of criminal activities at Branchwater's behest.

Following this report, Wonder Woman expresses doubts about whether Batman's inner circle have actually achieved a true victory, troubled by the fact that they had manipulated and lead several teams in service of their goal without any of them realising that they were working together. Batman explains that they must take a page from The Light's playbook in order to fight fire with fire and Robin proclaims that the team is the "Anti-Light" though Wonder Woman quickly points out that the opposite of light is darkness.

Wonder Woman questions the other members of the Anti-Lihgt.

She further notes that she is uncomfortable keeping the other members of the Justice League in the dark about their actions but Batman and Aquaman counter that the other members need plausible deniability should things go awry as, for example, they know that Superman would be unable to lie under oath about such covert activities. Wonder Woman then asks whether they expect her to lie but the others explain that she can use her status as princess of Themyscira to claim diplomatic immunity. She questions whether the rest of the Batman Inc. inner circle are prepared to lie and, although Aquaman and Miss Martian share a concerned look, nobody is able to give her an answer.

In order to gather further intelligence on Tara's location from the League of Shadows, Batman personally takes a small covert team consisting of himself, Katana and Metamorpho to Santa Prisca.

Batman, Katana and Metamorpho prepare to gather intel on Santa Prisca.

Dropping onto the island via a Batplane controlled by Oracle, heads off on his own while Metamorpho uses his powers to prevent him and Katana from being seen as they make their way through the jungle. They come upon Lady Shiva, who is training several assassins and are instructed by Oracle to follow her after a helicopter flies overhead in order to determine who she has meeting. Batman, having already positioned himself near the helipad, observes Lady Shiva meeting with Deathstroke and Cassandra Savage. The team discover that Tara was being held by the Shadows but that she had been taken away, with Deathstroke mentioning that Granny Goodness may have some use for her. Their mission completed, Oracle advises the team to head to the rendezvous point but, upon their arrival, they find Bane waiting for them. Batman fights against Bane while Metamorpho and Katana engage Deathstroke and Shiva who arrive to investigate the noise. Oracle uses the Batplane to attack Santa Prisca's defense systems, allowing the team to use the resulting explosion to escape.

Batman's team were instrumental in creating The Outsiders and making the team a success, purposefully staging several incidents for the team to deal with in order to increase their popularity with the general public.

Trivia

  • Black Lightning turns down an offer to join Batman's group, referring to it as "Batman Incorporated." Batman Incorporated is an organization funded by Wayne Enterprises, made up of the Batman Family and the Batmen of All Nations (and their successors). It was formed to stop crime and make Batman to a global franchise.
  • Although not explicitly stated to be members of Batman Incorporated, Batwoman, Hardware and Plastic Man all resigned from the Justice League at the same time as Batman, Green Arrow, Katana and Metamorpho so it is assumed that they were informed of the plan in advance.
