Background information[]
- Behemoth and his gargoyle clan appeared in the 11-page short "The Flashback of Notre Dame" from JLA Showcase 80-Page Giant #1, published in February 2000. The short was written by Greg Weisman and pencilled by Christopher Jones. Weisman wrote the story as a parody of the Disney animated series Gargoyles, which he had showrun and produced. The gargoyles were based on gargoyles from the Disney series, being both visually similar (though notably more bat-like), having thematically similar names and similar relationships. Behemoth is based on Goliath from the Disney series, both having the names of Biblical villains, both leaders of their clan, both with an evil twin with a phonetically reversed name.
- Behemoth was the leader of a clan of gargoyles cursed to eternal stone sleep until Captain Atom and Plastique inadvertantly broke the curse. After first believing the gargoyles were monsters and attacking them, Captain Atom realised his mistake and he and the Justice League Europe befriended them and helped send them back home to the magical island Brigadoon.
