This article is about the Bio-Ship species. For Miss Martian's Bio-Ship, see Bio-Ship. For Green Beetle's Bio-Ship, see Green Beetle's Bio-Ship.

Bio-Ships are a species of sentient spaceships native to Mars.

Physical appearance[]

While at rest, a Bio-Ship resembles a large egg. When awoken, they can become a large aerodynamic ship.[1] This shape-shifting also allows then to morph into other forms, including imitating mechanical Earth vehicles.[2] A Bio-Ship is colored a mix of two different colors, one often but not always black. Other colors include red, green, blue and pink.[3]

Biology and culture[]

Bio-Ships belong to tribes.[4] They reproduce by having the whole tribe melt together in a Bio-Cavern. The parent then emerges from the pool and buds off an offspring[3] in a process akin to cell division. The offspring has all the parent's memories, but is a unique individual.[4]

Bio-Ships are promised to a pilot, with whom they bond. They have a concept of retirement; Miss Martian's Bio-Ship retired after ten years.[4]

Powers and abilities[]

A Bio-Ship is capable of going into space,[5] withstand the friction of a rapid descent,[6] and endure the shockwave of a nuclear explosion.[7] It can also function as a submarine.[8]

Bio-Ships can operate independently, be piloted telepathically,[1] or be configured for manual flight, allowing non-telepaths to pilot them.[9] Bio-Ships have some telepathy and can communicate among themselves, but cannot telepathically communicate with non-telepaths. A Bio-Ship can hear another's psychic scream of pain over great distances.[10] They have some ability to mentally shield their occupants, but this can be overwhelmed.[11]

They can turn near-invisible in camouflage mode. They are capable of shape-shifting both their interior and exterior, allowing them to adapt to their user's needs, such as creating or removing seats as required,[1] opening hatches in the outer hull,[11] and generating a clamp capable of holding a large aircraft.[12] They can also adopt the form of other vehicles, such as flawlessly recreating a limousine both externally and internally.[13] They are also theoretically capable of assimilating alien technology.[14]

Most Bio-Ships are not armed, however it is possible for them to naturally develop weaponry over time when needed,[15] as Miss Martian's Bio-Ship did while on Earth. These weapons can take multiple forms, such as a ray gun in the gap between the nose[16] or laser cannons on its sides.[13][4] A Bio-Ship that has developed weapons passes the ability onto their offspring thanks to their shared memory.[15]

Bio-Ships are resilient, but not invulnerable and may need a period of recovery after taking damage.[11] They are able to heal even after taking significant damage given enough time.[10]
