Devourers are creatures that inhabit the Phantom Zone.[1] One attacked Superboy.[2]
Behaviour[]
The Devourer is able to sense, and is drawn toward, another being's rage. It will attack an enraged entity relentlessly, and is not deterred by counterattacks. It pays no attention to non-enraged beings. It appears to have only an animalistic intelligence.[2]
Physical appearance[]
The Devourer is a huge, worm-like creature with two arms, several fins, and no legs. It has a wide head tapering to a thin tail. It's upper surface is mostly dark blue, with some dark red and neon green details, while its underbelly is pale gray. It has four small red eyes set above a massive mouth containing ten sharp, wide teeth.[2]
History[]
At some point Dru-Zod encountered one or more Devourers. He maintains that safety in numbers is key to dealing with them.[1] Zod also taught his followers how to evade devourers by calming themselves and suppressing their rage.[3]
2020[]
After Superboy woke up in the Phantom Zone following the explosion of the gene-bomb on Mars, he saw a heat trail and went toward it. After Conner became frustrated and angry at his difficult journey across the asteroids, the Devourer rushed toward him and attacked him, slashing Conner's back and chest. Conner fought the creature, eventually able to touch it believing he could. The creature was relentless, however. Conner realized the Devourer had no interest in or effect on the unconscious Phantom Girl, and deduced the creature was attracted to his rage. Conner calmed himself, and the Devourer passed through him harmlessly and flew away.[2]

When a group of Kryptonians was prevented from leaving the Zone via boom tube by several humans blocking it, Faora Hu-Ul executed a plan Dru-Zod had trained them for; she urged her fellows to build their rage to summon a Devourer. As it approached, she had the Kryptonians calm themselves, leaving the Devourer to attack their foes, forcing them back into the boom tube. The Devourer was too big to enter the tube, but remained at the opening. After Faora attempted to get through the tube using her intangibility, only to be stopped by the team midway, she became enraged. The Devourer caught her by the arm and dragged her off.[3]
Powers and abilities[]
The Devourer is able to fly. It is also intangible to anything that does not consciously believe it can and wants to touch it, but this property appears to be caused by the Phantom Zone, rather than unique to the creature itself.[2]
