The House of El is a Kryptonian family. It held considerable power, but most of its members died during the destruction of Krypton.[1]
History[]
Prior to Krypton's destruction, the El family wielded considerable power; Jor-El was Chief Scientist and Zor-El was Chief Examiner. They made an enemy of the House of Zod after Jor uncovered Dru-Zod's planned coup, and Zor sentenced Zod and his followers to imprisonment in the Phantom Zone.[1] Both Els were friends with Tomar-Re, the Green Lantern assigned to Krypton's sector.[2]
When Krypton was destroyed, almost all Kryptonians were killed, including most of the House of El.[2] The infant Kal-El was saved, however, and sent to Earth where he was raised by humans.[3][4]
At least two other Els survived the destruction of Krypton. Kru-El was in the Phantom Zone at the time, but serves the House of Zod and wears his El family crest torn.[2] Zor-El's only daughter, Kara Zor-El also survived after she was sent to the Phantom Zone. After being released from the Zone, she joined the Furies.[5]
The House of El expanded once more after Kal-El was cloned against his will, but he eventually accepted the clone as his brother, giving him the Kryptonian name Kon-El.[6] Kal-El later had a son, Jonny Kent.[7]
