Jor-El was Krypton's Chief Scientist,[2] and the father of Superman. He died when Krypton was destroyed.[1]

History[]

20th century[]

At some point before 1978,[3] Jor-El exposed Dru-Zod's planned coup on Krypton, leading to the Zod and his followers being imprisoned in the Phantom Zone.[2]

Jor was a friend of Tomar-Re, the Green Lantern for Krypton's sector.[4]

Jor learned Krypton's sun was going to explode, but no one believed his warnings. The only person he could save was his infant son, Kal-El, who he sent to Earth in a rocket. Jor, along with his brother Zor and his wife Lara El, died when Krypton was destroyed.[1]

A statue of Jor and Lara holding up Krypton stood in the Fortress of Solitude.[5]

Appearances[]

Background information[]

  • Jor-El and his wife Lara died in the destruction of Krypton, though they managed to rocket their son to safety.
  • This is his 6th animated appearance. He appeared in person in the animated series Super Friends, Superman: The Animated Series, Legion of Super-Heroes, Teen Titans Go!, and the animated movie Justice League: Gods and Mortals. He also appeared as a statue or hologram in the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold and the animated movies Superman: Doomsday, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, The Death of Superman, and Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
  • The ice statue of Jor-El and Lara El holding Krypton in the Fortress of Solitude was designed by Jerome Moore. He deliberately made Jor strongly resemble his son to aid identification.[6] He created standard concept designs for both characters before designing the sculpture. He gave them circlets to suggest their high status, with Jor's having a more technological design. Moore colored Jor's tunic and the inner lining of his robes blue and red to hint at Superman's costume, though Jor has yet to be seen in full color on the show.[7]
