The League of Shadows is a criminal and terrorist organization, formerly led by Ra's al Ghul.[1] The group focuses on extortion, manipulation, and power-broking. They were formerly based on Infinity Island.[2] Through the leadership of Ra's, they also acted on behalf of the Light[3] and continued to do so after Deathstroke became their leader and they relocated to Santa Prisca.[4]

History[]

Early history[]

At some point a long time ago, the League of Shadows was founded by Ra's al Ghul.[5] As part of their training, all agents are programmed with hypnotic failsafe commands, to allow Ra's to exert full control over his minions.[6]

In 2008, several standard League of Shadows members escorted the frail scientists who would come to be Brain and Ultra-Humanite into the jungles of Bwunda where they would assume their present forms and experiment on several apes of Solovar's troop.[3]

Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad interfered with the plan and managed to distract the assassins for a short period.[7] In the end, Hook and Black Spider were defeated and arrested, but Gonzalez was killed by a third assassin who was hiding outside, waiting for her to exit the Farano Enterprises building. Hook and Black Spider escaped custody.[8]

Around July 25, the League of Shadows abducted Dr. Serling Roquette to create for them a weapon from nano-robotics. This weapon, called the Fog, would be capable of eating through matter, as well as downloading top-secret plans from computers.

After Roquette was rescued by Red Arrow, the League sent Cheshire to kill her in order to prevent her from developing a computer virus that could disable the Fog. They failed; the Fog was defeated.[2]

The League of Shadows attempted to launch a diamond lens into orbit, which would focus the light from the sun into a deathray. The plot was personally oversaw by the Shadow's leader Ra's al Ghul. Batman and Robin were able to foil the plot and as a result Ra's was accidentally killed when he lunged at them.[9]

Ra's was revived in a Lazarus Pit by Sensei, Ubu and Talia. Shortly after their master rose, Matthew Hagen also emerged from the pit after six months of imprisonment. After Sensei and Ra's defeated the mutated Shadow, Ra's had him shipped to Gotham City.[9][10]

The League continued to provide muscle for the Brain's Bwundan Kobra-Venom operation. Miss Martian impersonated a Shadow guard to infiltrate the hut where the gorilla children were held hostage. Later, in the main hut, a number of Shadows answered the Brain's call for reinforcements. They were defeated by Kid Flash, Djuba and Malavar.[3]

The League was contracted to kill King Josef Vladek of Vlatava. Sportsmaster assassinated him on September 28.[12][13]

After being stopped from getting too close to Lex Luthor by Cheshire, Red Arrow decided the only way to infiltrate the Light was by infiltrating the League of Shadows. And for that, he had to convince Cheshire.[15] He posed as a rogue freelancer, which seemed to convince Sensei.[16]

Cheshire saved Red Arrow's hide after his cover was blown, but was forced to defect from the Shadows herself too.[17] The Shadows took out a contract on Jade's life in response,[18] but it was an open contract and not a high priority.[19]

2015[]

Between late January and the middle of February, Cheshire left Red Arrow,[20] and rejoined the League of Shadows,[21] who took her back on a probationary basis, temporarily suspending the contract on her life.[19]

Because their search for the artifact had no results at the dig site, Sportsmaster looked through an exhibition at the Museum of Natural History. He escaped with the artifact, evading his daughter's squad by holding visitors hostage.[21]

The Shadows provided security and menial labor on another dig site, this time in Siberia. Superboy and his squad incapacitated those in the base camp and confronted Sportsmaster at the dig's ice drill. Sportsmaster and his ally, Icicle Jr., had to evacuate because of avalanche danger, leaving both the Olympia and Verhoyansk artifacts behind.[22]

Some time later, Cheshire found out she was pregnant with Roy's child[23] and left the League of Shadows again, who reinstated the contract on her life. After she eventually gave birth and temporarily reconciled with Roy, The Light's reluctance to target the families of the Justice League without significant cause may have played a role in the Shadows' failure to fulfil the contract.[19]

Dozens of League of Shadows assassins served as backup on a summit between the Light and the Reach. Ready to intervene at any time, they were called in when the Team attacked. But the Team had counted on this; a fair number of them had infiltrated the Shadows and disguised themselves as them. With their numbers dwindled, the assassins were quickly taken out by the Team.[25]

2016-2018[]

Ra's resigned from the Light and gave control of the League to them. The Light chose[26] Deathstroke to lead the League, and Lady Shiva as its new sensei. The League moved to Santa Prisca where a new headquarters was built,[27] after coming to an arrangement with Bane.[28]

2018[]

In January,[29] the Joker sent a message to Vandal Savage threatening to attack the United Nations in revenge for having been used as an unkowing proxy as part of the Injustice League. Lady Shiva tasked her daughter Cassandra with killing the Joker, as her first mission. Cassandra went to the UN and attempted to kill Joker, but instead struck Batgirl who dived in the way to save her from becoming a killer. Cassandra turned her back on her mother and the Shadows.[30]

Lady Shiva led a swordsmanship training session with new recruits. She took one, Cassandra Savage with her when Deathstroke flew in. They used their conversation, knowing that they were being listened to, to "reveal" that Tara Markov had washed out and been sent to "Granny", hoping she would be "rescued" so she could infiltrate their enemies.[27]

2020[]

Lady Shiva and Cassandra Savage plotted to gain intel from the Justice League for the Light and retrieve Orphan by having Savage pretend to defect from the League. They used a Glamour Charm to fake injuries on Savage, which they claimed were inflicted by Vandal Savage after a previous attempt to defect. They also let Onyx find out about the plan to test her loyalty, letting her believe Savage's "injuries" were the result of a failed attempt to recruit Killer Croc. As expected, Onyx defected for real, which served to confuse matters for their enemies and buy more time for Savage while they made up their minds.[18][32]

Onyx and Savage each approached Tigress with their stories. When Tigress took them both to a safehouse, a group of Shadows in a foodtruck attacked them en route, but they were defeated with help from Onyx and Savage.[18]

As Tigress and Cheshire debated on what to do with the alleged defectors, they came under attack by Black Spider, Rictus, Lady Shiva and Shade. Savage used the battle as cover to access the Vault's computer with her infiltrators. Shiva took Orphan hostage, and demanded that Tigress bring Savage to Santa Prisca before departing.[33][32]

As Shiva visited her captive daughter, she was informed of the loss of contact with some guards, indicating Tigress's arrival. She told her daughter that getting her back was the main reason she had done this, despite the Light wanting the Justice League intel.

Tigress's squad infiltrated the League's HQ, but as they approached Orphan's cell, Savage was provoked into revealing her true allegiance, and attempted to deliver the stolen data, but the transfer was stopped by Oracle. Joined by Cheshire, Tigress's squad was able to reach Orphan's cell, but were immediately confronted by Shiva, Spider, Rictus, Shade, Savage and a large contingent of Shadows.[30]

After Shiva gave Tigress an ultimatum, Tigress stalled for time while Orphan tried to free herself. Shiva and Savage explained their scheme. Orphan escaped and cut the lights, and the two groups fought in the dark. Once the lights were restored, Shade changed allegiance and teleported Tigress's group out, with Shiva hopping in the portal after them.

On the beach, Shade cited a debt he owed Cheshire and resigned from the Shadows. Shiva demanded Orphan remain with her, and provoked a fight. Orphan handily won, but refused to kill Shiva, and left with Tigress and the others.[32]
