According to Phil Bourassa, his design was partially inspired by the style of French artist and cartoonist Jean Giraud, a.k.a. Moebius, incorporating accents and flourishes from both him and Jack Kirby. Regarding the dents and cracks, Bourassa attributed them to the "myriad perilous scenarios" and "all the hostile environments" in the cosmos through which Metron navigated for untold eons. Furthermore, he thought it looked cool as he likes "broken and fragmented stone". In his initial draft, the Chair "had even more damage, splitting the rock and cutting into the large circle behind his head which created an interesting design."
