Solicitation[]
With Queen Perdita nowhere to be found, an APB has been sent across the planet! Now, in Markovia, the Infinitors have been assembled to track her down, but are the Infinitors to be trusted? How deep does this evil conspiracy run, and who will be able to unravel the web of deception in time?
Synopsis[]
Ominous Tidings[]
On her CatCo show, Cat Grant reports on Queen Perdita's abduction.
|
Harlan Matthews watches Cat on his phone as he and Jim Harper wait at Royal Memorial Hospital, and is less than happy she mentions Bowhunter Security's failure to protect Perdita.
Inside a hospital room, Serling Roquette, Denny, Dinah and Oliver lie unconscious while hooked up to IVs. Artemis assures Will they are under the influence of Sportsmaster's coma drug, and that even with the antidote it will take days to wear off. Will wonders why these four were targeted and not Bowhunter, and why Ollie and Dinah were posing as Roquette's assistants. Cissie blames Count Vertigo for the attack, noting his escape from prison the same day. Roy agrees, stating Vertigo has tried to kill her before, but Will reminds him that this was an abduction not a murder and that, either way, Vertigo is no longer in line for the Vlatavan throne, so he gains nothing except perhaps vengeance. Artemis is contacted by Oracle, who conferences her into a call with the other leaders of the Justice League and its affiliated teams.
|
At the Premiere Building, Wonder Girl is on line for the call, with Gar and Wingman watching from the side.
|
Black Lightning is also on the call, with Cyborg beside him, as Oracle hands over to King Brion, who requested the call.
|
As Zviad Baazovi watches, Brion assures the others he is committed to finding Perdita and Vertigo, but refuses the League permission to enter Markovian territory. He intends to handle the mission with his Infinitors.
After Brion ends the call, Gar is clear he will not leave things to Brion, and will be going after Perdita whether he is cleared for active duty or not, with or without the Outsiders. Wonder Girl assures him he won't be alone, but reminds him they need to know where to look. She then radios Raptor Squad for a report.
|
Robin answers that they are closing in on their target, as he, El Dorado and Looker observe Henchy from the eaves of a gargoyle-bedecked building.
At the Royal Palace, Geo-Force is ready to lead the Infinitors out, when Baazovi bursts in demanding to know where they are going. Fury explains that she has intelligence on Vertigo's whereabouts. Baazovi takes Brion aside and urges him to put aside any thoughts of vengeance against Vertigo for now. As Brion leads the way, Baazovi pulls Trajectory and Everyman back and orders them to protect their king.
On the Watchtower, Cyborg tells Lightning he wants to help Perdita, but Lightning reminds him that as a Leaguer he is too high profile for such a sensitive mission; that's why they have the covert team, who are preparing to leave as they speak. Spoiler questions why Thirteen is missing. Tigress explains she is hosting Doctor Fate that week, and Nabu was not cooperative.
Somewhere, Doctor Fate is busy, fighting a tentacled monster.
Nightwing leads Beta squad, also consisting of Spolier, Orphan and Mist through the Zeta-Tube.
The Infinitors crouch in some woods. Fury explains that the armored attackers were spotted in the area, where there are 16 cabins, all closed for renovation. Brion sends Everyman and Kobold to stealthily check the cabins, starting with the one lit one. Everyman takes the form of a raccoon and Kobold shrinks down and rides him.
As they peer through the window of the lit cabin, they see Simon Ecks, Piotor Platz and Johann Mintz playing poker. They do not go unnoticed; they had been expecting them. Back outside, six armored units set upon the other Infinitors. Geo-Force sends Trajectory to check all the other cabins while the rest deal with the ambushers. Everyman tranforms into a hulking monster, but is blasted back by one of the attackers, sending him out of sight of the others. The remaining Infinitors hold their own, but they can hear Everyman roaring and struggling. Brion is about to go to his aid when Trajectory appears carrying what Perdita. Brion assures Perdita one of his best will take her to safety, but she asks for him to take her personally, to which he agrees. He leaves the battle to the others, ordering someone to help Everyman, before taking Perdita away.
Trajectory volunteers to go after Everyman, but instead finds Baazovi, Vertigo's three associates and two armored attackers. She reports to Baazovi that Brion is taking "Perdita" to the Palace, but Fury and Kobold are still there. Baazovi is satisfied and has #13 turn off the Everyman sound effects being played by his armor, then orders the squad to depart. The six armored units fly away carrying Ecks, Platz and Mintz, to Fury's confusion. Meanwhile, Brion reassures "Perdita" she is now safe as he carries her, riding a wave of lava. She turns her head away and smiles.
Sorry Excuse: Memory Two[]
|
Ollie is comatose in his hospital bed, as Will questions why he and Dinah were undercover.
|
Ollie is woken up by his phone; it's Perdita. She tells him she is coming to America in three days and needs his help, triggering a memory from ten years before.[1]
- Oliver is caught in traffic as he tries to get to Star City International Airport. The radio traffic reporter blames the hold up on security arrangements for the visiting Princess Perdita. Ollie calls Dinah, but she doesn't answer so he leaves a message, telling her that he is there to pick her up and will meet her at baggage claim. Afterwards, Ollie berates himself for not telling her he loves her, as he fondles a ring box. As Ollie finally pulls up to the airport, he sees a familiar man leaving a taxi.
- Inside the airport terminal, Perdita's security and the TSA prepare to bring Perdita out. A crowd of photographers await behind ropes at the bottom of the escalators, along with some spectators, including a father with two young girls excited to see the princess. Among the photographers is Henchy, with a gun disguised as a camera. Denny escorts Perdita down. He realizes something is wrong, and takes a bullet in the shoulder. As Denny tries to take Perdita back up, and a female TSA agent gets the watching family on the ground, Johann Mintz and Piotor Platz also open fire. Perdita's second bodyguard, the TSA agent and Denny all go down. Suddenly, an arrow shatters a window and hits the ground, emitting thick smoke, as Green Arrow leaps down to Perdita's side.
Back in the hospital room, Ollie remains unconscious as Roy reminds everyone that Count Vertigo has tried to kill Perdita before.

Continuity[]
- This story continues from the previous issue.
- This story continues in the next Issue.
- A CatCo braodcast is seen for the first time. The company was first established by a billboard at Planet Circle seen in "Over and Out" and "Death and Rebirth".
- Artemis recognizes Sportsmaster's drug that was used by the Lex-Bots; she had used it against Psimon in "The Fix".
- Roy refers to previous attempts by Count Vertigo to kill Perdita Vladek; once such attempt was seen in "Coldhearted".
- Wonder Girl refers to Beast Boy not being cleared for duty. He took a break from the Outsiders to deal with his PTSD following Superboy's apparent death in "Volatile". Beast Boy says he won't be cleared with Dinah in a coma; she gave him therapy relating to his mental health struggles in "Forbidden Secrets of Civilizations Past!" and "Ego and Superego" and is in charge of his being cleared to return.
- Everyman and Trajectory take orders from Zviad Baazovi behind Geo-Force's back. This was first seen in "Ego and Superego".
- Thirteen is unable to join the Team's mission as she is currently host to Doctor Fate. She agreed to be one of four rotating hosts in "Kaerb Ym Traeh!".
- The flashback in "Sorry Excuse" tells the Earth-16 version of events seen in the canon adjacent DC Showcase: Green Arrow short film.
- Ollie wants to propose to Dinah. Their romantic relationship was first established in "Home Front" when Red Tornado covered monitor duty on the Watchtower while the pair were on a "hot date".

Trivia[]
- Number 16:
- There are 16 cabins in the Markovian woods.
- As of this issue, there are 16 known Lex-Bots.
- The CatCo chyron lists Brandon Vietti as its producer, a reference to Young Justice producer Brandon Vietti. Each issue of Young Justice: Targets has a reference to him.
- Raptor Squad is perched on a building in Paris which has seven stone gargoyles that bear a striking resemblance to those featured in "The Flashback of Notre Dame", a parody story of Greg Weisman's Gargoyles published in JLA Showcase 80-Page Giant #1, in February 2000. The story was also written by Greg Weisman and pencilled by Christopher Jones and each character is a pastiche of the main gargoyles from the original show: Behemoth (Goliath), Diabolique (Demona), Champs Élysées (Lexington), Montmartre/Montmarte (Brooklyn), Montparnasse (Broadway), Seine (Hudson) and Rive Gauche/Left Bank (Bronx).
Goofs[]
- Technically, the French message on the cover should have a space right before the exclamation point. French requires a space before multiple-sign punctuation in most French-speaking countries.
- There is a spelling error on the second panel of page 3: Artemis mentions Sportsmaster's coma "concotion", which should be "concoction".
- Green Arrow remembers events from "ten years, one month and eight days" before November 6, 2020, which is September 28, 2010. However, Greg Weisman has stated the intended date of the events depicted is September 29, 2010.[1]
Cultural references[]
- The cover design is based on Uncanny X-Men #141, the first issue in the iconic Days of Future Past storyline.
