Phantom Girl is a Legionnaire who traveled back in time with Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy to prevent Lor-Zod from killing Superboy. She was trapped inside the Phantom Zone alongside Superboy for some time while comatose, until she eventually awakened and escaped.[1]

Personality[]

Physical appearance[]

Phantom Girl is a slender girl of medium height, with pale blue skin and neck-length straight black hair. Her eyes have black sclerae and red irises. She wears a formfitting jumpsuit, covering her entire body from neck to toes, with a hood attached to her shoulders. The suit is almost entirely white, except for the black area around her neck and above her chest, with a white "P" on it, as well as black gloves. On her right hand she dons a golden ring with an L-insignia.

History[]

31st Century[]

Tinya is from the planet Bgtzl in another dimension of the same name. She has the power to phase from one dimension to the other, also enabling her to phase through matter.[1]

Tinya became Phantom Girl, joining the Legion of Super-Heroes, a group inspired by Superboy. They fought against General Dru-Zod's attempt to overthrow the United Planets, and banished him and his followers back to the Phantom Zone with the last Phantom Zone Projector. Due to his youth, Lor-Zod was not sent to the Zone, and relentlessly attempted to obtain the projector to free his parents. The Legion was finally forced to destroy the projector.

Lor-Zod then stole a Time-Sphere. Phantom Girl pursued him along with Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy, but they were exposed to chronoton radiation as he traveled back in time, leaving them immune to the changes he wrought. They searched the new timeline and found that Lor had killed Superboy, thus preventing the Legion's formation. The trio took the last Time-Sphere back to the point they knew Lor must have assassinated Superboy.[4]

On the day that Superboy publicly revealed himself to the world, Saturn Girl, Chameleon Boy and Phantom Girl successfully saved his life by preventing Lor-Zod's assassination attempt outside the United Nations without anyone discovering their involvement. Though they managed to stop him, Lor-Zod escaped, and with the timeline revised once more, the Legionnaires had no way of knowing how or when he would make another attempt. Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl and Chameleon Boy decided the best course of action would be to use their powers to secretly keep watch over Superboy until Lor-Zod would strike again.[4]

Outside the Science Center, Phantom Girl, Chameleon Boy and Saturn Girl discussed what Lor-Zod intended by destroying the Zeta-Tube and the M'arzz-Earth Communications Satellite. Chameleon Boy surmised that he wanted to prevent the Justice League from intervening and Saturn Girl instructed them to stay ready.

Concealed by Saturn Girl's psychic screen, Phantom Girl and her teammates kept close watch on Miss Martian and Superboy. An ensuing cave-in, caused by Lor-Zod, forced the trio to take cover and retreat. After reconvening, Saturn Girl decided that they had to keep their distance thereafter. Phantom Girl wondered how they could carry out their mission from a distance.[7]

After Saturn Girl repaired Beast Boy's psychic damage, Phantom Girl wondered if it was wise to intervene in past events, save for the "one big thing" they were supposed to.[8]

Camouflaged by Saturn Girl's telepathy, Phantom Girl, Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy spied on Superboy at the Royal Arena. When Saturn Girl sensed Miss Martian approaching, the trio took off, fearing she would detect them.

Later that day, the trio kept close watch on the Royal Arena as Prince J'emm J'axx gave a speech to the audience. When Phantom Girl's Time Scanner alerted them to the presence of their enemy, they rushed to intercept him. However, they lost the trail on everyone, because Miss Martian was blocking Saturn Girl's telepathy.[9]

Phantom Girl split up from her teammates to find and rescue Superboy. Phantom Girl spotted him as he submerged into the lava to neutralize the virus. In order to save his life, Phantom Girl reached out to Superboy and attempted to phase themselves to her home dimension, but due to the pain and his body's density, they failed to reach her homeworld and were transported to the Phantom Zone instead. Phantom Girl was injured, burning her hand and fell into a coma in the process.[10][11][1]

Superboy awoke and found Phantom Girl unconscious. Nicknaming her "Ghosty", he set out to find help for her. He carried her as he leaped from asteroid to asteroid,[10] and tried to protect her when he came under attack by a strange creature, though the creature showed no interest in her.[11] After escaping the beast, Conner began hallucinating, and collapsed next to Phantom Girl.[12] Phantom Girl remained unconscious as Conner woke up, saw a school bus, and worried he was losing his mind.[13] The hallucinations encouraged Superboy to abandon her, but before he did, he was found by Dru-Zod, who offered to help him.[14]

Zod took them to his encampment, and introduced them to his life-mate Ursa Zod. Ursa noted their unusual condition and similar burns. She surmised Ghosty had arrived in the Zone unconscious and had not awoken as they do not heal while in the Zone. Ursa offered to care for Ghosty, like family.[15]

Phantom Girl pretended to remain comatose as she secretly listened as Superboy explained to Dru and Ursa the truth about his origins, relation to the House of El and Krypton's fate. When Dru and Ursa left to take time to process the information, Phantom Girl revealed herself to Superboy, warning him they were both in terrible danger.[17]

Phantom Girl introduced herself to Superboy and began to explain to him how they ended up trapped in the Phantom Zone. Phantom Girl attempted to phase her and Superboy out of the Zone, but discovered he was fighting against her since he had pledged his loyalty to Dru-Zod. Phantom Girl attempted to convince Superboy to forgo Zod, but they were interrupted and she pretended to remain comatose until Superboy outed her and informed Dru and Ursa of her ability to exit the Zone. Phantom Girl pleaded with Superboy to leave with her, but he refused and ordered her to kneel before Zod. Phantom Girl tearfully refused and apologized before escaping the Phantom Zone.[1]

Phantom Girl returned to Mars following her escape and screamed in agony from her burned hand.[1]

Phantom Girl went to Prince J'emm J'axx and informed him about the situation with Superboy, though she did not reveal everything. Phantom Girl sought out J'emm's help to find Miss Martian, realizing she is the key to rescuing Superboy.[3]

They ended up in Phantom Girl's home dimension instead. They tried again, with M'gann psychically helping Phantom Girl to focus, but ended up back on the Watchtower. Danny told them that he knew the trans-dimensional frequency of the Zone. This was of no use to Phantom Girl, but they could try a Motherbox. Orion came with a Motherbox and a plan to open a boom tube on Trombus. Phantom Girl received a call from Ma'alefa'ak posing as her teammates, and she told them about Superboy's survival and the rescue plan.[3]

The group boom tubed to Trombus, and Danny and the Motherbox opened a boom tube to the Zone. M'gann reached out to Conner psychically, but he refused to come out. She went to lead the group into the Zone to get him, but Ma'alefa'ak took control of the Kaizer-Thrall and used it to subdue Phantom Girl and the others. She was helpless as Conner and three other Kryptonians exited the boom tube, and Conner collapsed due to his injuries.[3]

Tinya and the others remained pinned as Lor-Zod introduced himself to his parents. Forager was able to overcome the Thrall and make a brief attack, before being taken down by Ma'alefa'ak. The Zods retreated via boom tube, taking Conner and the Thrall with them.

Phantom Girl and the others eventually recovered. The group boarded Bio-Ship and headed for Earth, which Tinya thought was the most likely place the Zods had gone.[18]

The Bio-Ship arrived, and the group quickly detected boom tube activity at the Fortress of Solitude. Ursa Zod, now empowered by the Eye of Ekron, detected them and blasted them out of the sky as they approached. Saturn Girl was able to get off a warning, which allowed Superman and Orion to take the brunt of the blast. Bio-Ship crashed to the ground, and M'gann and Saturn Girl created a psychic illusion to make it appear everyone but Superman had died. The Zods eventually left with Superman as their captive.[18][19]

They arrived at Planet Circle to find other heroes already confronting Zod. The Legionnaires took on Ma'alefa'ak, with Phantom Girl and Chameleon Boy distracting him in the physical world, while Saturn Girl and Danny Chase fought him psychically. Ultimately Superboy was saved and Zod's forces were defeated; all were either sent to the Zone or forced to flee. The Legionnaires lamented Lor-Zod escaping in Rocket's Time-Sphere however. Tinya feared they had lost their last chance to go home, but Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy worried that Lor was free to strike again.[19]

Phantom Girl and the Legionnaires attended Conner and M'gann's wedding. Before the ceremony, a Time-Sphere appeared containing Brainiac-5, who had come to bring them back to their time, which he calculated they had substantially restored. Before leaving, Tinya wished Conner a wonderful wedding and life.[19]

Powers and abilities[]

  • Phase shifting: Phantom Girl can move her body through solid objects.[6] She can also do this to other individuals, but it can be physically straining on her.[7] She achieves this by phasing between her current dimension and her home dimension of Bgtzl.[1]
  • Flight
