Background information[]
- Rive Gauche and his gargoyle clan appeared in the 11-page short "The Flashback of Notre Dame" from JLA Showcase 80-Page Giant #1, published in February 2000. The short was written by Greg Weisman and pencilled by Christopher Jones. Weisman wrote the story as a parody of the Disney animated series Gargoyles, which he had showrun and produced. The gargoyles were based on gargoyles from the Disney series, being both visually similar (though notably more bat-like), having thematically similar names and similar relationships. Rive Gauche is based on Bronx from the Disney series, both named for areas of their respective cities, both are dog-like beasts.
- Rive Gauche was a member of a clan of gargoyles cursed to eternal stone sleep until Captain Atom and Plastique inadvertantly broke the curse. After first believing the gargoyles were monsters and attacking them, Captain Atom realised his mistake and he and the Justice League Europe befriended them and helped send them back home to the magical island Brigadoon.
- Since the gargoyles' speech was translated from French in the short, Rive Gauche's name was rendered in English as "Left Bank". Weisman used the French name in his Young Justice Character Countback.[1]
