Robotman was a member of the Doom Patrol. He died on a mission with most of the rest of the team, but was subsequently revived.

History[]

Early life[]

Robotman was a founding[3] member of the superhero team Doom Patrol in 2011.[4] He considered himself nothing more than a brain stuck in a jar until Garfield Logan helped him realize he was more.[5] He "died" during an unspecified mission that also resulted in the deaths of fellow teammates Chief, Elasti-Girl and Negative Woman[6] in 2015.[4] His head was recovered from the bottom of a river and he was revived. He felt he should have died too, but Gar helped him see that his survival was a gift.[5]

M'gann arrived at the Premiere Building with Robotman, Cassie, Jaime and Virgil to stage an intervention for Gar. Each took a turn to speak to Gar, with Robotman reminding Gar of how he had gotten help when his mom died, and how Gar had helped him come to terms with both his robot body and surviving the final mission of the Doom Patrol. All were coldly dismissed. When Gar went to leave, M'gann stopped him, and reminded him that unless he was willing to leave the Outsiders and his superheroic career forever, he still had to have his annual mandatory mental health check with Black Canary.[5]

Appearances[]

Background information[]

  • Clifford Steele was a racing driver who, after suffering terrible injuries in a crash, had his brain transferred to a robot body by the Chief. He became Robotman, a member of the Doom Patrol.
  • This is his fifth animated appearance. He appeared in Teen Titans, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, in a small cameo in Justice League: The New Frontier, and in the Doom Patrol shorts for DC Nation.
  • Robotman and the rest of the Doom Patrol were designed for "Nightmare Monkeys" in the style of Teen Titans Go! by that show's lead character designer, Chris Battle. He based them on the characters' appearances in the Teen Titans animated series. Chris was not told what the designs were for and only found out when the episode premiered.[7]
  • His "normal" design for "Emergency Dive" was created by Jerome Moore, who based it on the Doom Patrol comics as well as the live action series.[8] Khary Payton's voice impression is similarly based on the live action Doom Patrol Robotman, but his voice comes out sounding more like an old radio.
