History[]

Early life[]

In 2011,[2] Steve Dayton became a founding[3] member of the Doom Patrol, known as Mento. In 2012,[3] he got together with his future wife, Rita Farr, who also joined the Patrol. Rita's godson Garfield Logan joined the team after the death of his mother, becoming Beast Boy. Dayton and Garfield had a strained relationship.[4]

The entire team (except Beast Boy) went on a dangerous mission in 2015.[2] In Beast Boy's recollections of the event, Mento fled, leaving his teammates to die,[4] with only Robotman surviving that final mission.[5]

2016-2017[]

In late 2016,[6] after realizing he could exploit the orphaned Garfield for his own financial gain,[7] Dayton came out of hiding and claimed custody over him on the basis of being Rita's husband.[8] He took Garfield from Miss Martian and made him a star to fund his own life.[4]

On the set of Space Trek 3016, Steve approached Gretchen Goode for a word. She politely asked him for a moment, but slipped away. Dayton and Garfield stared at each other until the latter bluntly told him that Gretchen wasn't coming back. Dayton didn't appreciate being addressed to by his former sobriquet "Mento" and curtly asked if Garfield was coming back to the house. Gar told him he had a date and both muttered "thank God".[4]
