Tomar-Re (d. August 29, 2020) was a Green Lantern, chosen to attend a peace conference on New Genesis with Kilowog. While saving New Genesis from the awakening of a Promethean, he was slain by Lor-Zod. His ring chose a Forager as his successor.
Personality[]
As a Green Lantern, Tomar-Re has a love of justice and the ability to overcome fear with willpower.[1]
Tomar-Re was a stickler for protocol and initially dismissive of Rocket's petitioning the Green Lantern Corps for aid to stop intergalactic meta-human trafficking, citing that the Corps had an entire galaxy to police.[1]
His biggest regret was his inability to save Krypton from its own destruction, and he had been good friends with Jor-El and Zor-El.[2] When New Genesis was in danger of being destroyed, Tomar-Re refused to fail it as he did Krypton and made the ultimate sacrifice to save New Genesis and everyone on it. He died content that he had succeeded and did his duty.[3]
Physical appearance[]
Tomar-Re is a member of an alien species with a humanoid form, but possessing features reminiscent of both fish and avian, with a beak for a mouth and a fin on the tops of his head. He possesses elongated ears and blue eyes, and wears the standard green-black Green Lantern uniform, with green gauntlets and boots.[1]
History[]
Early history[]
Tomar-Re was the Green Lantern assigned to Krypton's sector. He became good friends with Jor-El and Zor-El and viewed his failure to save Krypton and the House of El as his deepest regret.[2]
2020[]
|
Tomar-Re and Kilowog neared New Genesis, where they were to represent the Green Lantern Corps at talks with the New Gods and the Justice League. Their power rings picked up a distress signal, leading them to a Blue Lantern whose life support aura was failing. Kilowog reinforced the Blue Lantern's aura and quickly recognized him as Razer.[1]
|
Orion welcomed Tomar-Re to the summit, who explained that Kilowog would also be along shortly.
After Kilowog arrived, the talks began. Rocket asked what New Genesis planned to do about Apokolips's interference on Earth, and was disappointed they would do nothing. Instead, they wanted a neutral party, the Green Lantern Corps, to mediate. Orion also came to wonder why so many humans became Lanterns. Tomar explained that a Green power ring's AI chooses its wearer on various criteria. Rocket was interrupted by a phone call, and left to take it.
Tomar-Re and the others heard explosions from outside and went to investigate. They found the female Forager badly injured amid the rubble of destroyed statues. Razer, who had inadvertently caused the damage while fighting Metron, realized his mistake, and ended up regaining his Blue power ring while retaining his Red one. He used the Blue ring to heal Forager, and then repaired the statues, before leaving.[1]
|
The conference resumed, and continued to go poorly. The meeting was interrupted by Bear, who wished to see his old friends Rocket and Forager, express his condolences over Superboy's death, and discuss the rumors he had heard about Forager being romantically involved with another Forager. Tomar expressed his own regrets over the loss of Superboy after finding out about Conner's death from Hal Jordan, and the loss of Krypton. They were interrupted once more by the arrival of Metron, who boom tubed in with a dire warning of galactic peril.[2]
|
Metron returned to the Vault with Orion, Rocket and Tomar-Re, but the intruders and the Phantom Zone Projector were gone. Metron was able to trace the tear in space-time made by the intruder's escape. Metron refused pleas to explain the situation, citing lack of time.[3]
|
The group boom tubed to the location to find a damaged, abandoned Time-Sphere. Metron reasoned this meant Lor would try to use the Projector immediately, meaning they must quickly defend potential power sources. Metron continued to explain himself in only cryptic terms.[3]
|
The group returned to Supertown to gather help.[3]
|
Metron called a meeting with Orion, Rocket, Flash, the Foragers, Kilowog, Tomar-Re and the Forever People. After he (finally) finished explaining the threat posed by Lor-Zod and the Phantom Zone Projector, he explained that Highfather had the Divine Guard protecting power sources on Supertown, while they would have to split up and defend the two potential sources on New Genesis's surface. Tomar-Re went with Orion, Rocket, Flash, and the Foragers.[3]
|
They arrived and quickly found they were at the right location. They were spotted and Ma'alefa'ak brain blasted them, knocking them from the sky. Tomar-Re caught everyone with a construct, and they renewed their approach. Tomar-Re fought Lor, who easily fended off the Lantern's initial attack. The Projector reached optimal power and Lor set it to retrieve his father. Tomar-Re and Lor fought once more, but they were interrupted when they realized the Promethean that made up the crater was waking, and began to emit a cascade of Source energy. Tomar-Re created a construct to funnel the cascade out into space. When Lor realized the cascade was almost finished, he attacked Tomar-Re with his heat vision. Tomar-Re tried to shield himself, but had insufficient power to maintain the shield and the funnel. Determined not to fail another world as he failed Krypton, he chose to let the shield go. Lor's heat vision penetrated Tomar-Re's chest, but even as he died, the Lantern kept up the construct. As his ring confirmed the cascade had been fully averted, Tomar-Re died with smile.
His ring left him, and quickly found a new wearer in Forager, who was sworn into the Corps by a hologram of Tomar-Re.[3]
