Vulko is Atlantis's Minister of Science and head of the Atlantean Science Center.

Physical appearance[]

Vulko resembles a bald, Caucasian male with brown eyes, save the long, gray hair that protrudes near his temples. He boasts a brown mustache and eyebrows, as well as a lengthy, gray beard extending well beyond his chin. Vulko dons a brown, full-body suit, which is highlighted by a geometric, light blue design.

Vulko was head of research into a mysterious starfish-like creature that had been frozen in ice for several millennia. He found it slightly disturbing that the creature still remained alive despite its condition, and that they had detected brainwaves from it. He reported their findings to Prince Orm, and noted that he considered the study of the creature the be the Science Center's highest priority. As a result, the Center was placed under high security, with only authorized personnel able to enter.

Later that day, Black Manta and his forces attacked Atlantis, aiming to steal the creature from the Science Center. During the attack, Black Manta was stopped from taking the creature by Aqualad and Garth, and attempted to destroy it in retaliation. A single piece survived, which had already started to regenerate. Due to the damage sustained in the attack however, Atlantis no longer had the means to safely secure and study the creature, and so it was suggested that the single remaining piece be turned over to allies on the surface, ending Vulko's studies.[2]

Vulko attended the annual Conference of Delegates in his capacity as Minister of Science. The opening ceremony got no further than introductions before it ended, as Xebel had failed to send a delegate.[4]

Vulko was also present for the first proper day of talks. The conference came under attack from Ocean-Master, who easily resisted the gathered delegates and guards, but was forced into retreat by a mysterious stranger, who disappeared as suddenly as he arrived.[4]

At the Science Center, Vulko oversaw the tests to confirm Arion's identity. Though the magic and DNA testing was not conclusive, it was consistent with his story.[5]

Vulko and the rest of the Atlantean cabinet watched Mera Nereus's first speech as High King and chanted her name.[6]

Powers and abilities[]

  • Atlantean attributes: Atlanteans, although human, have through scientific and sorcerous means[7] developed several abilities which allow them to live comfortably under the sea:
  • Breathe underwater: All Atlanteans are capable of surviving the aquatic atmosphere under the sea. Some accomplish this without the presence of visible gills.[2][7]
  • Temperature resilience: Resistant to low temperatures[8] and the effects of freezing,[9] although notably hindered by high temperatures.[10]
  • Durability: Dense flesh, although not invulnerable.[11][7][12]
  • Strength: Ranging from undetected levels to super strength.[9][7][13]
